	why cant we be like Denmark?

I saw on Oprah... Denmark has free medical, no taxes, four years unemployment at 90% of your salary if you get fired or laid off, a year off for maternity leave, and people park their babies out on the city sidewalks and leave them to nap in the fresh air without any ever being abducted. Wtf?? we are supposed to be a great nation? thats ridiculous that we can't be like that. When did we decide its better to conquer the world and be the evil warlord country instead of the benevolent country that takes care of its own.

Forgive me for reverting back to the dog discussion, please, but I now have 4. I heard through the grapevine about this big boy that had been abandoned tied to t tree after this family had lost their home. A nieghbor had been caring for him, well, feeding him at least, but was tired of doing it so he was going to take him for a ride and dump him out in the country somewhere and let him fend for himself, so being a softy I took him in. He is a great pyranese/st bernard mix (great bernard...or st pyranese?) How can people treat animals like that?

How can people treat animals like that? someone contacted me this weekend about a donkey that is being kept just tied to a tree in the yard, emaciated and standing in its own filth. what on earth possesses people to keep animals if they don't even THINK of taking care of them. Its heartbreaking.

We once had a rescue St. Bernard and although there was an adjustment period while he realised that he was safe (he had been horribly abused) he became a loving, loyal pet and lived a long and happy life with us. I wish you much joy with your newest pet!

I don't know how people do either, and I applaud your stepping up - whether temporary or long term. I am heartened to read of your gesture..... hopefully things will work for the better good of all. Like PeaceRiver said, there may be adjustments and a dog takes at least 6months to begin to feel safe in a new home... slow gentle grooming is a good way to begin a bonding w/a rescue img src="" alt="" />

I also have two Great Pyrenees and did rescue work with the Pyrenees club in Florida. It is very hard to find homes for the large to extra large breeds, so I commend you. We may not agree politically, but when it comes to humane treatment of animals, we are on the same page. As I think most of us would be. The st. Bernard side of your dog will be pretty laid back. However, the Great Pyrenees side of your dog will be stubborn and a little more active. Both breeds have sweet, loving personalities. I have learned a lot about the Great Pyrenees over the years so if you need any advice, send me an email.

Thanks breald, I love big dogs, the bigger the better, but given what I have right now I don't think I can get much bigger.

He was one of the reasons we opted to get another big dog, Sammy, our Bernese Mountain Dog. Here's Ralph at about 11 years old- he lived to be 12 1/2- vey old for a St. Bernard.

Peace, thanks for sharing Ralph's Beach Picture -not often one gets to see a St. Bernard lounging on the beach --- usually it's snow LOL I'm still figuring out how to get a big dog in this house w/out my spouse noticing.....I've manage two kids, several cats, chickens, two small dogs.... haven't pulled off the big dog......yet

Hi TWH. Fellow pandhandleite here. Hope you contacted Alaqua if you couldn't take in the donkey. MWC, never feel badly about bringing a subject back to rescue. I'm with breald here. If we won't help our animals, we can't/won't help our fellow man! SM, big dogs rule as much as smaller ones do. They all have special places in our hearts with the time we have with them. If spouse has issue with shedding, get a big poodle! Uhmmm, if he has issue with an animal being as smart or smarter than him though, forget it! And if he doesn't mind shedding? I've met PR's Sammy. Awesome Berny he is!! Wanted to bring him home with me. :-) Great dogs themselves as most breeds and mixes are. Ahh if the whole world just knew the love of dog and loved a dog, we would be in a much better place.

Especially as he got older, he liked to snooze on sun-spots on the carpet and would get up and move to stay in the sun-spot as the day progressed. I have pictures of him napping with his head on the hearth of a Franklin fireplace enjoying the warmth, dozing in a sun-splashed patch of daffodils and even trying to lay on a large bean bag chair (with his hind end totally hanging off) in a our oldest daughter's sunny bedroom. And, naturally, a summer day beach was a good place for him, too. That photo was taken on Nauset's outer beach, miles and miles away from town and accessible only by a 'beach vehicle'- either 4-wheel drive or a specialized 2-wheel drive that can traverse the soft sand. It was the perfect place for a family picnic and to let the dogs loose to have fun. Don't worry about bringing home a new big dog; they start out as little dogs and don't reach their full size for a few years.... I'll bet Hubby won't even notice! :-)
